Thanks for commenting. I'm not sure China actually has the same sort of "close allies" in the way the US has the UK or other Anglophone/Western European Democracies. My homestay parents' political views are certainly atypical. Interesting they respond "the UK" given recent news that China tried to hack the British Foreign Office.

It's a nice polite thing to say, but I don't think that many people really believe it. About half the people I've asked which country they regard to be China's closest country, knowing my country of origin respond "The UK" (my home country), but when asked why, none of them can give a good reason.

I would say the human dimension is international relations. Or at least, that's what matters the most.

Have fun with your final! Are you reading anything else complementing your texts? I've found reading things like Rivertown (by Peter Hessler - look it up) and others are helpful in getting a fuller sense of the history beyond the dry stuff in textbooks.
